An article at CBS news discusses a proposed bill that would allow anyone to obtain a birth certificate for $100.
"The measure would alter a state privacy law that limits the release of state birth records to those with a tangible interest in the matter, such as a close relative of the person for whom the records were requested. It would also help the state close its budget deficit."
The immediate purpose of the law is to allow interested parties access to President Obama's birth certificate. But it would be a nice, albeit expensive, benefit for genealogists researching in Hawaii. And who knows, maybe some other states will adopt the idea as a money maker.
